NOY3 - national orienteerign day @ Glendale

What a great day weatherwise and also in terms of people enjoying the bush.

Hope all the newbies had a great time.

Would be interesting to hear any feedback, good or bad that they may have.

My run?

Well I was alarmed to find out that A.H. had run the Medium Red. If that's not bad enought, next I find Jenny E. has done likewise. It's going to be a struggle to be up in the placing's today me thinks.

Mapgirl reckons "Medium is the new Long" and I thinks she might have something there. Used to be more Long Red than Medium Red runners but it's now swung the other way round. Are we all getting sick of being flogged by Blatchford and Todkill (Jnrs) and seeking relief on another course? For me it's the 2km less that's been the attraction.

Started off OK but skipped a little wide (left) on number 3 probably costing a minute. Also lost time (45 seconds) standing in the circle at the first boulder control (number?). Biggest mistake just after talking to some 4WD people when the little kid asked me if I was doing "the great race" or something like that. I told him (on the run) that I was orienteering and this must have broke my concentration as I misread the tracks and lost about 2 minutes on number 7? Met GT running into the last control (he doing the long course) and sprinted in with (behind) him to the finish. This accounted for me beating the Dentist by 6 seconds into third place.

Must say I didn't feel at all well any of the way around so expect others must have had some problems out there.

1 3:46
2 4:04 climbed above w/c heads then east of railway cutting
3 3:04

8&9 7:27 8 - contoued to road. Bike track to second w/c then over spur
10 3:03 bad choice to go below cliffs which was very rough & rocky. Spent a little while looking in earlier N-S w/c.

Total 51:08

Was feeling in last 15 mins backing up from night champs the night before. Spurred on by trying to escape the Dr Welbourne.

ok. here we. got all my splits. think i got most of them ok actually. splits that is actually. was a bit late at number 8 so took a guess.
map. i think i worked it out to be about 1.49. ooh yeah. drew that quickkk.
start - 1. 3.56. well, sure stuffed this one up. just went all the way along the track til just passed the creek and then into the bush. first i think i was way to low and then upon climbing id say i went mighty close to the control but just missed it. after a fair bit of searching asround i turned around to see the control low in the ground just behind me. possibly a minute lost here.
1 - 2. 3.44. along track nearly to the top of the hill but cut the corner at the large track junction. used the minor track junction as an attckpoint. down into control but still a little sketchy (note, really noticed yesterdays runs on the legs from this leg onwards for a bit)
2 - 3. 2.49. along minor track all the way to the fence corner and up. no problems but exit out of number 2 was really bad. going to the track instead of going through a little bit of green. bit silly.
3 - 4. 0.52. contour round. legs hurting.
4 - 5. 1.05. straight over hill. picked out gully and control. legs still caning but ran up that short hill with some speed still.
5 - 6. 4.07. fair slow on this leg. legs hurt heaps. went to the west out of the control pretty much contouring to the minor track. stay on this track line straight along running as best i could til the major track junction. dont into control. no problems.
6 - 7. 2.31. ran on compass over hill not really caring where i hit track. stupidly mistook one car wreck for the other (was at southern one) and then ended up south of the control on the boulder groups. stupid mistake quickly realised but still prob lost about 30sec+.
7 - 8. 6.07. out of control straight up the hill to minor track. followed this line crossing embankments and road. ran above all gullys not losing height until later. proabably wasnt taking full advantage of the great running through here as i was real sketchy about my exact location. shouldnt have worried as i just hit the track that surrounded my controls watercourse and straight in.
8 - 9. 1.09. again above cliffs out of control. attackpoint track bend but went around the green before the control (or so it seemed)
9 - 10. 3.28. along top of cliffs. but real stupid mistake after this i started running up the watercourse going north south!!! stupid!!! thankfully i realised quickly. but still lost 40+ seconds. gah.
10 - 11. 2.36. up hill (legs feeling better now so ran no worries at all) hit track at point. straight along here using it as my line to the next track and control. bit left.
11 - 12. 3.02. crossed watercourse at track. cut to next rack. along. aimed straight in at control and missed it by about 2m id say! 30secs lost.
12 - 13. 2.31. track to open. cut to next track at watercourse thingy. off bend straight into control.
13 - 14. 2.45. just ran not caring which track i was on as long it was going in the right direction. picked out gully. up to control.
14 - 15. 1.31. bad compass run. FAR too low. saw track. back up. lost 45 prob. maybe more.
15 - 16. 1.12. passed top of tracks. contoured in. nearly didnt see it again!
16 - 17. 1.23. just ran on compass tried to ingore tracks. but got a bit confused. stopped at exactly the right track though and control was just down the hill a bit. still time lost!
17 - 18 - finish. 1.31? (i seem to have missed a split somewhere. i think this is it.) coz i was flying down hill to last one. kept going til i got it. in to finish though what seemed like green.

hmm...so. is this too long? as in report?

fair sloppy run actually. prob could have been about 44mins. could see i lost a bit of time on o grub on some splits. not the happiest chappy. think i got a bit lucky with the win.

howd everyone else go?

What a great day for orienteering-great weather and great turnout. Great run for me?? Not really. Denis set another great course where you would think it will be easy with all the features on the map and then you make it harder on yourself by not following the rules. At least I beat JL!
Should have done a lot better and feel without the 2 lazy navigating mistakes I could have been closer to the every so swift Nicole H. I was too low on control 4 and too low on the creek for control 8. I kep t clean and dry until the end where I tripped near the last control and fell into a water filled track. Made me laugh. Thanks KB for the encouragement for the uphill finish at the end.
Love this map with it old tram tracks and cuttings which has been reserved by the Newcastle cycleways movement and will be turned into a cycle corridor/railtrail when the Fernleigh track is finally finished.

sounds like a good one. well done guys!

Did the newcomers take info away with them? Do you know how most newcomers found out about it?

Show Profile  leepbackPosted: 6 May 2008, 5:35 PM [NZ Time]  Edit Message
Fat Rat - all the new people were given a copy of our newsletter.
I should have had some more material for them but didn't find time to do so but most of them know about the website.

Seems a combination of our website, a local press listing, a couple of minutes on ABC local radio and some Central Coast press (thanks Colin Price) were the main contributing factors. There was also a TAFE group of 6 that had contacted me prior to any advertising.

Word of mouth is also a big factor. When we get somebody along a couple of times they tend to bring along a friend or 2.

Also there is probably a critical mass where once you get a certain number along there is more of a buzz. We hope this is the case anyway as it certainly was buzzing (for a local event) on Sunday.

I'm sure a least a few of these newcomers will turn out to be at least semi-regulars.

Hi All,

A bit late in getting my times and in, but here goes...
Map [2:10]
S-1 [4:30] Legs didn't wnt to work, off main track slightly north of control & had to duck back (like most others by the look of it)
1-2 [4:18] Climbed above gully heads, out to powerline clearing/track, through east edge of cutting, off track junction
2-3 [3:18] Through green, off track 150m before control, but then dropped too much
3-4 [1:42] Climbed too much to watercourse head NW of control then had to drop down
4-5 [1:19] Contour climbed, then dropped across NW to control
5-6 [4:52] Contoured west, minor track to clearing, cross country dropping towards gully, climbed through green (not low enough!)
6-7 [2:19] Followed compass bearing, found minor track/cleared area, then carefully into control
7-8 [6:07] Climbed above rock, minor track north, crossed cutting at major track near western reservior, stayed in this track until through patchy green, dropped into gully until rock line
8-9 [2:09] Climbed out, contoured, but went around green losing a little time
9-10 [2:34] Contoured straight, went around (north of) green in gully, then dropped and contoured around to control
10-11 [3:50] Climbed ut at an angle, over-corrected direction and bounced off green, crossed main weatercourse, then (unnecessarily) slowly across to control
11-12 [4:31] Contoured, crossed motorbike track, missed break in creek & hit major marsh, backtracked then waded across creek
12-13 [4:07] Getting very weary, sort of straight, bent around minor watercourse/man-made ditch, through green east of control, then slowly into gully
13-14 [2:54] Cross country to angled track, came off at minor motor bike track, but then unnecessarily went arounf small blob of green, mistaking it for the large blob of green!
14-15 [1:37] Compass bearing, but bounced off green in gully below control
15-16 [1:22] Contoured, then climbed into control
16-17 [1:23] Headed ESE across watercourses, then S through motorbike tracks & luckily straight into control
17-18 [1:11] Downhill on compass, hit motorbike track U-bend, along minor creek into control
18-Finish [0:47] Straight (through green!)
Total Time = 57:01

That is almost as good as I manage, but was a bit wobbly on 3+4+11+12. Couldn't have found anything like enough to catch Glenn & Bjorn.

I thought there was still plenty of route choice. Perhaps leaving out 9 may have improved this even more.

yes great day, great course
i always stuff up at the start, it takes me a while to familiarise myself with the map
i guess its all part of being a newbie, im hoping to do some reds before the end of the year!

Thought the event was great, and very successful for orienteering in our area to have such a large turnout. How could they not have enjoyed it? Great weather, great courses, great map, and superb company!!! They'll be back!!!
I ran medium red. I haven't ran a long red for quite a while now. Not because of Blatchford and Todkill Junior - I tend to just disregard their names at the top of the board. I think when you're as inconsistent as I am in the bush, you just never know if a 4km course will take you half an hour, or an hour and a half. To go for the 6, 7, or 8km course - well I can't risk that Russell would hang around that long!!
Disappointingly I made quite a few errors early in the course, but ran quite well from Ctrl 4 on. After those errors, I was a little surprised with my position on the course, but not happy to be beaten by leepback yet again. I knew I should have tackled him as he powered to the finish! Next time.
Thanks Denis.

Looks like the event that had the most entries also has the most comments.
Thought I would join in, dont have too much to add this time.
Thanks to Denis for setting great courses on a great map. I'm not intimidated by Blatchford and Todkill Juniors but I lost my splits.

When I strated orienteering in 1986 I had the problem that I could run, but not read the map at speed. I still can't, but can't run anywhere near that speed now, so my navigation is getting a little better.

Anyway, that year I was competing in State OY events in the Orange courses against Grant Bluett - and sometimes managed to beat him. Look how well he progressed!

So, if Josh and Josh and Stephen and Alex and whoever can beat me - I've got used to it. Let's hope some of them can emulate and perhaps surpass Grant's efforts!

I can only get slower now, and as I now run only when at orienteering events, can't expect too much.

Good on you to our younger generation. We've had Rob Vincent dominating thing for far too long now. Hopefully he'll start slowing down sometime soon.

Let's see how we all go at Wallaroo...

Yes Sir Arthur - that Vincent fellow is a "hasbeen" and has been for some time now! Even Blatchford senior has stopped shaking in his boots at the mere mention of his name.

Pretty late on the post, have now set up a picasa account to upload my gps tracks onto (http://picasaweb.google.com.au/steventodkill)

Long red to day as usual. Felt pretty flat in the legs after the beach run the previous day.
Started out missing my start time cos i was warming up. put Trotter's "that was your start time" down to sledging, then when i got back up to the start realised it actually was my start time (think i was min or so late)

Map 1.41 Bit rushed after missing start, quite a few dodgy circles
1 4.33 messed up by running a circle around the control not seeing it where i was expecting it, easily 1.17min from when i got into the area till the control (another cool thing about having the gps, can look at time and distance at points along the legs to find out how much time lost in these situations)
2 3.15 out to track and cutting above embankment and in across the little tracks
3 2.38 through green to little track and along towards the fence bend and up
4 0.52 around on the contour
5 1.14 over the hill, drifted right a bit but gully pulled me back
6 4.12 was meaning to head down along the side of the main gully but drifted off to the right onto the little track under the tanks
7 2.16 slog uphill in through the green and past the southern car wreck and into the top of the gully forming in front of me
8 6.13 up the rock to the little track and past the tanks onto the main track, then down the water course, was a safer route choice with the watercourse down to the control and no up and down but looking at it now its pretty wide
9 1.29 back up on top of rock and around above the green patch
10 3.01 sticking above the rocks in the open forest, hit the main N-S water course and took a bit to figure out which way i needed to go
11 3.12 around the hill using the tracks if they were going the right direction, using the line of the track bend to cross the watercourse
12 2.26 straight forward leg but just couldn't decide where to cross through the green, changed direction several times. no dramas getting across creek once i got to it
13 2.16 used little track to give the line in across the watercourse
14 2.26 along the jumble of tracks, as long as heading it right direction didn't matter what one, couple of compass check to make sure of it. up along the watercourse
15 1.51 rough direction towards watercourses, was expecting to be more pronounced than they were and ended up overshooting to the right, touch more green so not really between the two blobs.
16 1.10 around the hill, climbing across the track loops
17 1.22 looking across the gully picked the height on the far side i wanted and headed that way, touch high but not much time lost, maybe 15-20sec
18 1.39 headed down the gully, then stopped short, bit confusing with the steep slope on the right of the gully and the little tracks

wasn't really with it and not overly happy with run

soory I couldn't be there so I ran a self-organised street event in Beijing instead - came first without any pressure. Since then I have had a dose of sorethroat & coughing - must have been something I ran through; I have doubts about any long distance event at the Olympics.

Carolyn & I felt the earthquake in Sichuan last Monday, as we were in Chengdu about 100km from the epicentre. No adverse affects for us other than a change in itinerary, but that was a very small inconvenience in a major catastrophe.
