Bummer, wet day! but still many turned out for some more excellent courses designed and built by our super setter Denis Lyons.
Having set here and then controlled here with Kazza last year I thought I could do well.
Jenny had set a scorching pace in the medium Red and I had pre-knowledge prior to my commencement so I knew the mark to beat.
All was going well and I was hopeful of getting close to Jenny's mark but the wet conditions eventually caught up with my glasses pretty well exactly the same time the steeper conditions caught up with my pretend good fitness.
Walking in some of the slower areas my glasses fogged and then got splashed from wet vegetation. From there on in (about half way around) my vision and map reading was reasonably compromised and so was my performance.
I reckon I could add on at least 2 minutes for that, but I carried on hoping to maybe pull up in second spot.
Surprisingly on my return I found Dr Kitchener had just eclipsed me by about a minute. Darn, I thought even though I was visually impaired I had a reasonably clean run. Maybe a couple of route choices I may have added a bit too much climb or even distance. My final distance was 5.45 km for the advertised 4.1 km, but there was a few hundred metres added on due to the remote start/finish necessitated by the wet weather and muddy track hindering access to the original assembly.
Interested to get some other distances to see how I fared.
See you all next week.

basilbrush | Posted: 26 April 2010, 11:03 PM [NZ Time] Well my route choice went to 6.1 km so forget comparing to me. Happy with my time - just over 60min (great considering I was backing up from a great run at the night champs)

I think AP did about the 5.9km so we are all reasonably close.
Although RR had a bit of a shocker going to the wrong one. |
footprints | Posted: 28 April 2010, 9:19 AM [NZ Time] shocker - navigated perfectly to #8 twice - first time from #6, then from #7, but made a mess of recovering #8-#7. I can only put it down to wet weather (wet map bag, wet glasses, wet brain) as everything was drawn correctly on the map. |
wetmit | Posted: 28 April 2010, 11:43 AM [NZ Time] Had an enjoyable run on the Medium Red. Apart from a couple of errors my main issue, as always, is fitness. Missing the summer street series has not helped in this area.
Made a route choice error on 3-4: Thought I was saving contours but direct was actually better and gave a better approach to the control.
Made a navigation error on 7-8: I came out on the incorrect road because I switched off and went 90 degrees left. Then this was compounded by staying on the road around the top of the gully resulting in yet more climb rather than going back the 100m back onto my planned route.
Still happy with my result. |

hindsight | Posted: 29 April 2010, 12:20 AM [NZ Time] aside from a 20 min and 28 sec excurion off the edge of the map (see route gadget) I had a great run albeit with some room to push the pace a bit better. |
