SSS17 - Platsburg

Last one - next week the park series which is a good first time point to point course for noobs. |
bluey | Posted: 18 February 2010, 5:33 PM [NZ Time] Thanks for a nice course, Peter, with a variety of terrain types. The two and three, and a four pointer to the south and east made route choice a little easier this week. However, working out the optimal way to pick up the one and two pointers in the centre of the map was a good challenge. |

cariar | Posted: 19 February 2010, 10:44 PM [NZ Time] Decided to be a bit conservative knowing that the start/finish would involve over the hill and back. Picked a route which would have allowed for additions and subtractions and avoided the dreaded drain, meaning I cleaned up the central section. However I totally missed even seeing the big scoring cluster to the SE and probably could have done the same distance and the same number of controls with about 8 more points. Not aggressive enough when it counts! Doh!
tam.'s mum cleaned me up by a mile. As we were together for the first control and headed off in much the same direction afterwards, I think her route choice was far superior. Still pleased with distance and I seem to be back to the "longer distance, earlier home" syndrome.
My award for the best clue for the year fell to trudger's clue from today:
2B - Corner house western wall features a doorway? rain gauge? cat run? and the answer was CAT RUN. The cat was in the run when I was there, but it looked a bit mangey and I almost thought it was a fake one! poor kitty!! but it was the best clue all year!!
So today's course fell into the category of someone might/did get them all. As Malcolm said at Presentation - "it's good to have a variety of setters with a variety of ideas". I think today's course offering was great, but especially to see the variety of routes from RG.
It's been a great season - finished it much better than last year. Good to see Sam and Caroline so high in the standings in the womens and congratulations to Steveo, Stu and AlexM - speed fiends. Congratulations to Kim - good to see you back!
Now for the Park series - looking forward to that and so say both my feet and all 8 functioning toes and the other 2 that seem to be at war with the world. |
Mess Engineer | Posted: 20 February 2010, 6:10 PM [NZ Time] Thanks for the final course Peter. Already counting the days until Street Season 2010-2011 resumes! |
trudger | Posted: 21 February 2010, 12:13 AM [NZ Time] For SSS16 O_grub suggested he gets upset when people are awarded bonus points for finishing early. I just realised that this bonus practice may actually minutely penalise those that finish early as they may score relative less points per minute in bonus time than if more controls were available for them to visit!
eg. for SSS17 score 52 points in 40 minutes = 1.3 points per minute.
In 5 minutes extra one should score 6.5 points if more controls
but are actually only awarded 5 bonus points for early finish
(that's if my logic, maths, and fact recollection are correct).
Of course on lower scoring events the two should balance out.
Personally I think it is good that just a few of the top runners can scoop the lot (bet they have different routes anyway). And for others, getting back a tad late hurts less as they have scored more points along the way. |
leepback | Posted: 22 February 2010, 1:26 PM [NZ Time] I think it is determined by the nature of the map. Platsburg (is that one "T" or two?) is a fairly small map in comparison to most so scooping the lot isn't that out of the question for a couple of the supermen. |
