SSS10 - Valentine

Show Profile  footprintsPosted: 27 December 2009, 2:10 AM [NZ Time]  Edit Message
73 competitors ran or avoided the hills around Valentine, in the last run before Christmas ( and for some, the last competitive run before the Christmas 5-day. For a few the training effects were reduced by the post-race meal of fish and chips from the take-away shop across the road.

Best performed "newcomer" was Andrew McLeod in 3rd place, one point behind Stu and Alex. Andrew has been in England, Ireland and Europe for about 6 years, but has prepared for this return performance by checking out the maps on the web whenever possible. He had hoped to be back for last week's event at the Racecourse, but an engine failure during takeoff at Bangkok delayed him by a day - best excuse for this year.

The results are provisional - Peter will compile all of the statistics and handicap results when he returns after Christmas.

Felt weak the whole time and walked many sections.
Doesn't point to a great Christmas 4-day.

Hot chips weren't too bad and proved a popular after-run "energy" boost.

Very very happy with my route choice as it avoided the vast majority of hills but still got a good score. Route 3B-1F-1P-3E-1T-1S-1R-2D-3D-2B-1G-1E-2K-2C-1A-1B-1J-3A-2K-1N for 32 points in 43:56. Thanks to setter Colin Bailey ... hope you recover soon and join us in the running. 7.4 ks according to www.geodistance.com which wasn't bad considering the hills and heat. Extended my pre-drawn loop twice on the run as I was covering a lot of ground. At the start drew a complete loop and decided to go anticlockwise as the 8 points in 4 minutes 3B-1F-1P-3E option was a great way to start. Spoke to a number of other people who got 32 points and many of them had to face the hills so I think RouteGadget will be very interesting this week. Maximum score was 43 so percentage was 74.4% which is 2nd highest year to date (best was Irrawang). Deliberately missed 1C as was running out of time on the way back and crossed the road from 1B probably 20 metres south of its location. Drove and had a look at 1C on the way home and think it was the right decision as probably would have wasted time looking for it as I hadn't read the location on the map clearly. Wanted to get 2J but thought if I did that I would either be late or have to sacrifice 1J (which I knew the answer for as its a feature house of the area) and 1N anyway. Took a blank copy of map and clue sheet to pass onto Onesteel colleague who didn't turn up for what would have been his third event
