hindsight | Posted: 11 December 2009, 11:48 AM [NZ Time] Have been travlling with work since round 2, not running much and in a rush to make a Xmas function so was a bit dusty this week, the result 68.2 - handicap 88.6 reflects. Interesting to see the varied route choices on route gadget even after just 10 routes entered. I think that says something for the map and the prowess of the organiser, well done David. I was focussed on the most efficient sequencing in the SE corner and was so focussed I overlooked 2J which in hindsight I should have visited between 1V and 1T on may way back north to get 3E, 1P, 1U etc. I'm not sure with a finishing time of 44:04 I might have dropped something else may be 1W and 1H which in hindsight would have made it all pretty academic. |
cariar | Posted: 11 December 2009, 1:36 PM [NZ Time] Now I really love Routegadget. I've discovered that my route was entirely encompassed within Sir Arthur's - and with his skill and analysis that tells me I dun good! OK it was probably only half his distance but for once I picked a reasonably efficient route. Probably about 400m short of what I really wanted to do so had I known that I would have sacrificed 1B and that would have enabled me to collect 2E, 2F and 1G, rather than abridging at 1E and going cross country to Finish. Back with 25 secs to spare. MTBfred and I discussed the "fear of the statician" as we are both on our last warning for being late. MTBfred has blown his and so he is now enjoying himself. So if I had decided to be late I could have got an extra 4 points - think I'll live a little in future. I'm not scared of Pete G.
Glad I went NW basically - I felt that cluster of 1 pointers to the SW of Start was a trap, almost seeming like a maze.David did a really good job on clue placement - and interesting clues too. Sorry to have to disagree with some others but interesting clues are fun - and mostly it needs to prove you went "there" rather than reading the answer from 50m (tall people with good eyesight are so annoying).
Loved the area - a Street event where I didn't feel there were streets - a function of the wide streets and somewhat rural setting.
Thanks David and Anne (and the land owners) for a beaut event. |
Mess Engineer | Posted: 11 December 2009, 8:54 PM [NZ Time] Cariar ... you will have to ask Rockman/Footprints what happened to 1G on the Routegadget map.
My Map had 1G on it midway between 2F, 3D and 3C (just east of the pathway to 3C) but it has disappeared on the uploaded copy ?
Didn't realise the Bermuda Triangle extended as far as Medowie. |
footprints | Posted: 11 December 2009, 11:09 PM [NZ Time] M.E,
1G didn't get transferred from the printed map to the OCAD file when I was preparing the map for Routegadget. When I have a OCAD file available I use that by adding the control points, instead of scanning the event map, as the image exported from OCAD is a lot "cleaner" than a scanned copy (unless I stuff up something, like leaving out 1G...)
You may also notice from time to time that I re-arrange and crop the map so that the up-loaded map file is the best compromise between size and legibility. That's why the same distance measured in pixels varies between events.

Mess Engineer | Posted: 12 December 2009, 1:55 PM [NZ Time] Footprints I just assumed the cropping you did was in photoshop or similar manipulating a scanned in image. If you effectively redraw the controls in an OCAD file, and get this done by 9 pm each Wednesday night thats even more "impressive". Wouldn't it ultimately be easier to get Event Organisers to email you the file prior to each event to minimise the work? I also thought previously it would be good if Event Organisers had a way of getting it in Routegadget (in a locked state so people can't access) prior to the Event so they could experiment with different routes. Then after the Event the file is "unlocked" and people can enter their routes normally but also see the Setters thoughts. Anyway if I knew the work involved I would have given you Cardiff South File on a memory stick the day of the event. |
leepback | Posted: 14 December 2009, 12:25 PM [NZ Time] Quite a puzzle this event.
Couldn't work out a great route and in the end could have totalled the same score for about 2 minutes less as I ran close to one on the way in that I'd gotten first.
Might look a little silly but if I was a bit faster it would have worked as I would have been a furhter street south picking up extras but didn't have the leg speed to carry out my desired route.
Ran straight past a control and didn't see it but I'll admit I was just going hard (well haed for me) as I knew I needed to get a move on or was going to be late. This cost me a crucial 2 points and lots of places, bummer.
In the end I just snaaked in and was totally shot.
Must admit it was diffenrent to get up to the northern "quiet" section of this map. Not sure how many went up this way as I didn't see as many people as I usually might.
Thanks to David and Anne K for the event ant to David's work colleague for allowing us to use their vacant lot as an assembly area. Forgot to take garmin but ggogle maps had me doing about 6.3 km which was a bit down on my usual.
