Having problems loading the map onto Routegadget - so far it has taken longer than it took me to run my course today, and much less success as well.

2hours later: RG is up,and the rush is on

Decided before the event that with post rogaining legs was going for the flat first before facing the hills. By 2C I thought I was going to struggle but got a burst of energy after 3E. Also struggled at the start to come up with a path through the guts of the map to link up the feast of 1 and 2 pointers.

My route 2B-3C-3D-1G-2C-3E-1M-1L-1C-3A-2D-1B-2A-3B-2E-3F-1F-1K-1N-1J for 37 points - 1 for 12 seconds late. Got all the 3 pointers which I was very happy about (a rare event for me). Did the flat 2B-3C-3D-1G-2C-3E loop (14 points) in 15-20 minutes so was reasonable points/minute. Wasted 30 sec or more on 1M coming to the bridge by the tennis court as I was too far east. Cut through the concrete drain to shortcut 1C. Should have got 1H but missed seeing how close it was on my path. 1B-2A-3B-2E wasn't that bad as almost same contour (apart from dip down to 3E). Knew I was going to be really pushing it with 2-2.5 minutes to go trying for 1N-1J and paid the price wasting my "late free run" for this series (and using my one chance of "leniency" in the stats). My "dive" at the finish table was all the wasted extra effort for 1J.

Managed another 19 "Consistency points" for 2nd week running so knocked off Carolyn Rigby but see how this continues for the remaining events. Only leaderboard I can possibly finish at top of. Being a course setter next week will allow 2 weeks for someone else to overtake.

My partner Kathleen wasn't working so attended her first Street Event heading south to tackle the flat part. She will most probably attend Friday as well so may become an erratic convert.

Thanks Bob for a challenging day. Bob and I talked about Course setting strategies when he vetted my course and he discussed the option of having a mass of low pointers being worth similar amount to more sparse high pointers, and I could see this work well at the Lakelands event.

Lakelands map gave the opportunity for 2 different runs - flat and circuitous or hilly and linkable with thought. In the spirit of "contours are my friends if I work with them" I planned to go a close loop north of the start then head south but the couple of higher pointers in the north section involved a little more altitude than I initially saw, but that's OK. Hence I didn't get nearly as many of the down south points as had planned. Very pleased with mental approach this week. Lost about 1 min 1N-1J - maybe the track is a bit wobbly there.I think this week's course set by Bob G exhibited the greatest amount of thought in control placement, but this is always reliant on street arrangement. Thank you Bob for a great and challenging course. Lots to think about.

Second that opinion cariar.

Very challenging control placement and well thought out making us all have to think on the run as well.

The diverse variety of different course setter approaches this year is proving to be a real learning opportunity for competitors and setters alike.

3F-2E-3B-2A-2G-1B-2D-3A-1C-2F-1Q-3E-1D-2C-1G-3D-3C-1A-2B-1M-1L-1J-1E-2J-1N in 45:32 = 44PTS. The plan was around the outside of the northern area to minimise climb , then the flat and then back north for the some inner 1's & 2's with remaining time. Lost time at 3C looking for answer. Made several poor choices. Overlooked 1H between 2A & 1B, went from 2F to 1Q by longer southern route then to 3E and then backtracked out to 1D. Should have left 1D and probably 1A out and would then have got 2H and possibly 1K and been on time.

Once again I felt crap, more so than can be accounted for by the recent Suburban Safari. Actually felt worse on this than nearly anytime during that event. Decided I couldn’t face the hills so took off initially to the North. With the luxury of not expecting to bag the lot I dropped a couple of one pointers and had an efficient but slowish trip in a sort of clockwise direction around the flatlands. Got past by a couple of younger blokes but it didn’t throw me much as I knew there wasn’t a lot of use trying to keep up.

Eventually I crossed the road picked up the school P&C clue then travelled around the perimeter of the hilly section trying to limit my climb as much as possible. Think this worked OK as I scored a lot more than I should have at my pace. Managed to get all the 3-point controls. Perhaps in hindsight I should have gathered up 1H for an easy extra point as I would have had time. This would have lifted me at least six places higher.

Once again I on comparison with a youngster I had less distance for 3 more points. He wasn’t happy. Thanks to Bob for the course and Margaret & Karen for giving up their chance to run so that they could offer Bob assistance (even though we all know they were just too sore after trying to unsuccessfully beat me and Berko on Sunday.)

Distance: 6:55 km (not very far really)
Time: 43:37
Points: 37
