SSS #1 Throsby Creek

First real street o for the year. very happy with run, thought I'd die around 30-35 min mark but made it to the end. walked in from my last control, under estimated how quickly I could get back, missed 1 pointer so could have got 40. Route choice seemed to flow well with out having to backtrack much. Well set Glenn, plenty of options. People seemed to be heading in different directions.

My Route 2F 3C 2J 1E 2C 2A 1C 1D 3B 2B 1F 2E 1H 2G 2H 3D 1L 3E 2K 2L 1M = 39 pts in 44.35. Should have finished 3E 1N 2L 2K 1M. Had 10 mins to go at 3E but felt tired and expected to slow so ignored 1N

I've put the map onto Routegadget

http://garingal.com.au/cgi-bin/gadget3/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=51&kieli=en

To enter your route treat it as a one leg course ie from start triangle to finish circle, via however many controls you actually visited. You will still have to enter your total time, and you may have to turn <snap> off to get started.

My route 1M-2L-1N-2K-3E-1L-3D-2G-1H-2H-2E-1F-2B-3B-2C-3C-2J-1J-1K for 34 Points. Normal level of occassional minor errors here and there. Very happy with my run as if 44 was the max of the day that makes my run 77% of this which is the highest percentage I have got over the last few years. Thanks Glenn for the course.

Also manned the Finish Desk for the first time to start getting used to the process prior to my own Event 6 Cardiff South. This meant I missed out a lot of the post run discussions so will have to look on here and Routegadget for info.

UPDATE
Very interesting reviewing RouteGadget to see the more experienced runners ways of minimising backtracking and the multiple options taken. After my first stint at the Finish Table I suggested a simple cheap improvement idea (to Malcolm) for managing the blocks in start order which I will pursue after Sunday when I will grab some blocks to size them up.

As usual I felt fairly ordinary before I started, weak, unsteady etc, but hoped I’d feel OK once started. This was the case but I did feel very light headed after I had finished. On course I ran OK for me, probably a reflection of having had a few runs during the East Coast Orienteering Tour that travelled thru VIC, ACT & NSW. When running I moved at a reasonable speed but had to resort to little walks during the 45 minutes.

A bit disappointed to be back late losing 2 points on the first run so I’m probably well out of the time management category already. I just overestimated my coverage in the last ten minutes.

Basic route choice was to cover a lot of the northern section ignoring the wrong side of the tracks controls and then head south allowing plenty of return options. OK but in hindsight maybe should have done more in the flatter southern parts.

My route was; 2F, 1J, 2J, 3C, 2C, 2A, 1C, 1D, 3B, 2B, 1F, 2D, 1E, 2E, 1H, 2H, 1L, 3E, 2K for 34-2= 32 points in 46:53

Looked like a good turn out but had to leave early for another function so could not get an accurate assessment of numbers or how I faired overall (perhaps middle of the bunch).

Clues I visited were well constructed and obvious so well done Glenn. Wondering if Steveo, JoshyB or Alex or other speedsters went close to collecting the lot.

Leepback ... Mick Kavur counted the blocks some time after 6:30 pm and said there were over 100 attendees.

Setters Comments (inexperienced setters may find this useful)

My aim was to maximise the navigation and required by giving multiple route choices and avoid a "runners course" where there was one obvious high scoring route. The general layout of the area helped with this but I spent considerable time choosing control locations in order to maximise options. It seems this was achieved as competitors routes seems quite varied. I also tried to provide "micro" route choices between adjacent controls. You will note a lot of the controls are on, or close to, junctions giving more than one route between adjacent controls. In many cases there was not a great difference in the time for each option but competitors still need to make a decision on wich way to go. I also placed controls to utilise some of the more "complex" parts of the map (eg. 1M-2K-2L-1N and 3C-2J-1J) and to reward careful scrutiny of the map (eg. 2B, 3B, 2D& 2E look close at a glance but are quite spread via the gound). I placed some of the 3 pointers so that the slower runners would still get to some of them and also to draw the fast runners to cover more ground. Russells remapping of this area in 2006 helped immensely when placing controls in the exact location on the map as it includes the underlying cadastral map (this shows the boundaries of every individual property so locating an exact house is easy).
Setting good clues is always challenging and requires a lot of lateral thinking, checking for possible obvious things that could be mistaken for the right clue and a careful choice of the multiple choice options to avoid confusion. I managed to find something usable fairly close to the each planned control location. How "interesting" the clue is was never a consideration (one year I will set a course with every clue a power pole number!). I did one last check of every site (by car and on foot) on the Sunday immediately before the event after returning from the World Masters and discovered two of clues had recently changed/disappeared. One was the ad in the bus shelter (2F) which had been replaced with a new ad and 2J was originally a builders sign on an adjacent house which was removed in the week before even though the builder was still working. It pays to check and check again

o_grub I read your comments with interest as I fall into the mentioned category.

I had already laid out the #6 Cardiff Course and had attempted a similar strategy with a centralised start location and many route options from each control to those nearby. I want to get people to have multiple options of how to come home and ensure they can always continue to get points on the return route. Also each slow runner should be able to get at least 1x3 pointer but I will be amazed if the fast guys can get all of the 3 pointers.

I have laid out (in geodistance.com) and trial run 4 totally different 8 k (about my limit) route choices which only slightly vary the final points score. Obviously the fast guys will exceed that. I was going to display some of these at the Cardiff finish location as I want to hear peoples discussions (hopefully positive). Maybe you will be one of the ones giving feedback.

So hopefully I can get some general assistance at the Start/Finish Table as I have no family members to assist me and I want some free time to listen and learn. Bob Gilbert can't make this event and is looking over the Map and Clue Sheet for me.

I found Throsby Creek very interesting as I changed my decided route home several times on the run. I was happy with my initial route choice (decided in the first 2 minutes - although some of the ones in RouteGadget are more efficient) of 1M-2L-1N-2K-3E-1L-3D-2G-1H-2H-2E but left the remainder open depending on remaining time when I was out there. After deciding to go 1F (east) rather than 1E (west) and getting 1F-2B-3B I again changed my mind as I was intending 1E-1G-1K (3 Points) but decided I had time for 2C-3C-2J-1J-1K (6 Points) which made a large difference to my end result. If I hadn't run in a street early at 2B by mistake wasting 2 mins I could have swapped 1K for 2F af the end.

The variety of routes selected was really revealed in RouteGadget this week. I think you achieved your goal!
