Message Yes Mess. Simply draw a line with any line feature (my map file had a dedicated thick pink line) using the straight line mode. Click on Edit/Measure and it will tell you in kilometeres the length of that line. (eg. 11.65km) Close the "Measure" dialog box and hit Delete to delete the line. Very handy.
